An Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) and an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) are carried aboard aircraft and marine vessels. During a distress situation these devices can be activated (sometimes automatically) and assist Search and Rescue (SAR) personnel to locate the position of the distress. It is possible for the received ELT signal to sound different from search to search.
